The ICF Core Competency, Establishing the Coaching Agreement, is more than just asking the client ‘what would you like to achieve?’  In the setup of a coaching session with a client there are a number of important questions that we can ask, that enables the effectiveness of the coaching conversation.

Using metaphors in coaching is a really powerful technique and the metaphor that you use is best if it comes from the coachee’s language. As a coach it’s great if we can be aware of the opportunity to create a metaphor and to take the coachee’s lead on this.

For example, in a recent coaching session a client was talking about moving forward with their goals and used the phrase ‘I need to hit the button’ on that project and ‘I can only see red lights flashing in that area, not green lights’. These phrases give me a lot of clues as to the learning preference of the client and also give me an opening to ask better questions and to expand on the metaphor to help their thinking and awareness.

For example, in response to the ‘I need to hit the button’ phrase I could ask, ‘So where is the button?’, ‘How big is the button?’ or ‘What would it take to hit the button?’.

And the flashing red lights and green lights gives us the opportunity to create a dash board, traffic light system or some other visual.
