Mentoring for High Performance

Monday, December 05, 2016

We are often asked on our programs ‘what’s the difference between coaching and mentoring?’ and many managers realise that what they call ‘coaching’ is actually ‘mentoring’.  In this blog, rather than explore the differences, I want to consider how mentoring is similar to coaching and how it leads to high performance in the workplace.  More

Shifting Under Performance - Part 1

Tuesday, August 02, 2016

Whenever I am delivering a coaching workshop and talking about coaching to enable engagement, accountability, responsibility and high performance, our conversations are often naturally diverted by someone who says… More

Having a Great Performance Conversation!

Friday, July 01, 2016

I really like the topic of this blog! And not just because I wrote it! It’s because I really believe that done well, performance conversations can be a great experience for managers and their teams.  However, all too often in our workplaces performance conversations are seen as difficult, a necessary evil or something that HR has made us do – an obligation to tick the boxes. More

Forget active listening and just listen!

Thursday, October 01, 2015

So one of the ideas that I have been reflecting on lately is whether the concept of active listening has become out dated!  Yes, I know it’s a bit controversial! But before all great coaches before me rise up and call for me to hand in my qualifications and International Coach Federation credentials, let me just explain…. More

I’m just here for a refresher

Monday, September 28, 2015

At the start of each coaching workshop I ask the participants ‘what is it you’d like to achieve from today or get out of today, so that this has been a great use of your time?’ More

I've tried everything and they just don't get it!

Thursday, September 24, 2015

This week I have been delivering a number of introduction to coaching for leaders and managers programs (a one day program that introduces coaching fundamentals in a really practical and ‘let’s implement immediately back into the workplace’ kind of way).  And a with one particular group a really strong theme emerged, when I was asked the question ‘what do you do when you’ve tried everything with a certain employee and they are not just getting it and they say they do, and coaching doesn’t work, so obviously I have to tell that person what to do’.  This half question and half strings of statements was backed up with a lot of murmuring and agreement from the rest of the group. More
